Chillventa 2014: refrigeration trends

Recently the 4th edition of Chillventa, the most important European meeting on refrigeration technology and HVAC, took place in Nuremberg.

This latest edition has set records with more than 30,000 visitors and nearly a thousand exhibitors. The international profile is evident according to the following figures: over 17,000 foreign visitors coming from 110 countries and two-thirds of foreign exhibitors. More specifically, INTARCON received a large number of foreign visitors showing great interest in its up growing international expansion.

During Chillventa, INTARCON emphasised feasible solutions facing new F-gas regulations. Therefore, INTARCON proposals in the short-term are focused to take advantage of HFCs in the framework of European Legislation from 2020 onwards. On the one hand, the emphasis on known solutions of low GWP (Global Warming Potential) as the R134a refrigerant, which has been integrated recently into all INTARCON units for positive temperature. On the other hand INTARCON aims to reduce refrigeration load as much as possible in self-contained units, e.g. 0.3 kg of per kW of cooling capacity.

Chillventa, as a proactive technological forum of the industry, comes up with a wide range of new solutions and proposals coming from manufacturers of components. As expected and following the trends of Euroshop this year, the main standing out proposals are natural refrigerants as CO2 and hydrocarbons, in this order of importance and above synthetic refrigerants low GWP as HFOs.

It is noteworthy that most of CO2 proposals as refrigerant are based on transcritical cycles: while it is true that they have become very popular in Northern Europe, these kinds of solutions throughout balmy weathers like Mediterranean one are dubious. However, solutions based on subcritical CO2 cycles had a petty presence in Chillventa, so it seems to be an area to be developed.

Meanwhile, manufacturers of gases have proposed low GWP refrigerants based on mixtures of HFC, HFO and HC. Some of them including already the ASHRAE reference, such as R448 or R449.

In short, though this latest Chillventa edition did not surprise with big news, it secures increasingly the path of the industry towards the new regulatory scenario of the next decade.
